History of the 1952-1955 Bentley R-Type:
In 1952, Bentley boosted the size of its engine to 4,566 cc in the so-called “big bore, small boot” models. The company also rectified the “small boot” criticism with “R” Type chassis, whose wheelbase remained 10 feet but whose overall length was extended eight inches at the rear, to create a useful trunk space.

GM’s four-speed Hydra-matic automatic transmission became available in 1953, and was soon standardized. The new welded box chassis was strengthened by cruciform bracing, central lubrication was standard, and the ride stiffness could be adjusted via a column lever. Standard accessories included a radio, a heater, fitted tools, leather upholstery, and a sunroof. In all 2,320 R Types would be built during the car’s four years of production. R-Type Bentleys are quite functional, and extremely elegant.

About this Car:
This car was sold new to Loxham Garages to be used by the Chairman, Mr. Ewert Bradshaw, as his personal car and also to be used as a demonstrator for prospective customers.  In 1955 the car was sold to T. Fletcher of Burnley, Lancashire and then in 1963, ownership was passed to K.T. Watson.  In 1972, the car was exported to the United States and sold to Roberto M. Silva of Jersey City, New Jersey.  He sold the car in 1977 to Ron Goldman of Englewood, Colorado with 81,086 miles on its odometer.

Mr. Goldman had a very comprehensive restoration done on the car from 1982-85 which cost in excess of $64,000. The air-conditioning was retrofitted with a rotary compressor and it is totally concealed making it acceptable for judging without penalty at RROC meets.

In August of 1985 after driving 1625 miles to the RROC meet, the car scored 91.5 points.

In 2002, the car was sold to Doug Daman of Hot Springs, Arkansas.  The last owner was out of La Jolla, California and has enjoyed every mile/minute of owning this car.  She has aged a bit since being restored 34 years ago but has held up pretty well overall.  The car is a #3 condition example.  Paint shows fairly well with flaws here and there.  The interior could use new leather but the carpet and headliner are in decent shape. She drives well.  Comes with spare tire, jack, tool set, rear fold down tables, rear foot rest, rear vanity mirrors and Air-condition. We look forward to showing you this 1954 Bentley R-Type.
